It’s eight minutes long ,but made me think , are we gearing away from print media of all types and towards a future of internet based, narrow dimensional perspectives…I have to admit i may have fallen prey myself..

My Result
When I did the quiz for my lifestyle in the US my total Footprint was 9 ,as compared to a US average of 24. If everyone lived like me, we would need 2.1 planets.

For India my total foot print was 2.7 compared to India’s average of 0.8 global hectares per person!!! If everyone lived like I do in India ,we would need 1.5 planets to live in.

As Indians apart from the fact that we’ve got garbage strewn all over the place and the concept of not littering has yet to gain a strong foothold , I still think Indians have got the basics right when I comes to not wasting and being environmentally friendly …. Think of the reusable bags when we go to the market , using actual washcloths and dishcloths rather than paper napkins, Styrofoam cups and plastic spoons ( are you kidding me??) we have our fingers for heavens sake ( I still cant eat a vada or dosa with a fork or spoon without being messy , and I couldn’t care less, cutlery is overrated!!) , paper plates ( we have our staple stainless steel dishes , ok when guest come we get out the china , or actually if it's a traditional ceremony we have our eco friendly banana leaves),in India the concept of have legs –will walk or at least use public transport available when needed exists ( this is tiring and you get a tan!! ,but you know sometimes a little walking is good)..and I can go on and on, unfortunately once we leave India , and I’ve noticed this more so in the US , we tend to forget this, yea I know we cant really do laundry half as often as we do in India ,so there goes the idea of reusable washcloths ,but what about all the other things ,we certainly don’t need as many plastic bags when we go shopping or all that packaging , and here's one I’m personally guilty of … how many printouts of the same thing do I need I just OverDose on print outs at times ..should cut down on it …anyway ..its earth day today , used to have a compulsory commemoration of the occasion when I was in school , here are a few eco friendly tips for when you go shopping …….

Simplify your life as much as possible. Only keep belongings that you use/enjoy on a regular basis. By making the effort to reduce what you own, you will naturally purchase less/create less waste in the future. For information on voluntary simplicity, check out Voluntary Simplicity Web Resources. (umm I lead a pretty cluttered existence sad to say!!)

Switch from disposable to reusable products: food and beverage containers, cups, plates, writing pens, razors, diapers, towels, shopping bags, etc.

As much as possible, create a tree-free home:
replace paper napkins with cloth napkins
replace paper towels with a special set of cloth towels/napkins - store the used ones in a small container in your kitchen and just wash and reuse
purchase bleach-free, toilet paper that is made from the highest post-consumer waste content you can find (80% minimum)
if you print documents, print on once-used paper and/or bleach-free, recycled paper with the highest post-consumer waste content available (or hemp/alternative-source paper, if you can afford it)
create and use note pads from once-used paper ( I do this often)
leave messages for family members/roommates on a reusable message board ( yup Pranoti and I used to do this :)
make your own cards/letters from once-used products or handmade paper

Avoid products that are packaged for single use (i.e., drinks, school lunches, candy, cat and dog food, salad mixings, etc.). Instead, buy in bulk and transfer the products to your own reusable containers.

Instead of buying these items new, save and reuse all: bags (plastic and paper), rubber bands, twisties, boxes, and packaging material.

Avoid creating trash wherever possible: when ordering food, avoid receiving any unnecessary plastic utensils, straws, etc. (ask in advance specifically not to be given these items - it may (I have found many times it DOES) make the store clerk/owner think twice about giving these items out freely in the future), buy ice cream in a cone instead of a cup, don't accept "free" promotional products, buy products with the least amount of packaging, etc. Every little bit of trash avoided does make a difference!

Buy products that will last and take care of them.

Teach your children the value of thrift.

Pick up books from your local library or used book store. The library is also many times a great place for finding magazines, CDs, books-on-tape, and videos.

Buy food (and drinking water) from local companies whenever possible. Support your area's Farmer's Market. If possible, grow your own fruits and vegetables using organic gardening practices.

Eat unprocessed/unpackaged food whenever possible.

Only purchase tuna labeled "dolphin safe".

Reduce your energy consumption:

If you enjoy reading newspapers and/or magazines offline better, consider visiting a local library. If they don't carry a magazine you like, find out if you can buy a subscription for the library
Never release balloons outdoors. They frequently find their way to open water (even from 100's of miles away) and can harm or kill turtles, whales, and other marine mammals.

GIVE ECO GIFTS ( interesting concept!!)
Offer/ask for gifts that don't involve buying anything. For example, time together, a back rub, babysitting, donation to charity, tickets to an event (musical, lecture series, play, movies, concert, etc.), etc.

As an alternative to standard greeting cards, look into sending electronic greeting cards or making your own from waste paper. ( i dont know ecards are cool but regualar cards are good too..)

I guess digicams and e-newspapers are the way to go !!!!

Soulmates and other flaky stuff.....

Soulmate (or soul mate) is a term sometimes used to designate someone with whom one has a feeling of deep affinity, friendship, love, strong intimacy, sexuality, or compatibility.
A related concept is that of the twin flame or twin soul - thought to be the ultimate soulmate, the one and only other half of one's soul, for which all souls are driven to find and join.
However, not everyone who uses these terms intends them to carry such mystical connotations; they are sometimes used simply as an expression of strong emotional feeling for someone.


Apparently the concept of soulmates arose from Greek mythology. According to the story, our ancestors once had 2 heads, 4 arms. They did something to offend a god so that god punished them by splitting them down the middle, resulting in the creation of humans. As a punishment, we are condemned to spend our lives searching for the other half, our soulmates.

Well with my overdosing of chick flicks, email forwards( refer quotes below) ,new age books and Richard Bach…. I have to admit it did seem quite nice if soulmates did exist…in fact in an episode of FRIENDS, Phoebe thinks she’s found Monica’s soulmate, which gets Chandler agitated because the guy Phoebe knows really ‘clicks’ well with Monica…well in the end Chandler figures out that even though Monica and he are not soulmates in the true sense of the word …they are perfect for each other , in that they love each other and choose to be together

So destiny and fate are overrated, which basically means all of you who waited for Mr. Right should have settled for Mr. Right now ,which means some people should have had more fun in undergrad and high school!!!!


Having said that don’t you ever get the feeling that people you are close to say family or very good friends, well don’t you feel a deeper connection ,that in someway the folks who are your family were meant to be your family ..well same way the person you marry is probably the person you are supposed to get married to ,as preordained by the guy/gal who decided who your parents should be …. Most probably the person you end up with wont be a soul mate according to the definition of the word…. In which case your true other half would be roaming earth,time and space in search of you but not finding you, not even at the end of all eternity …
Have I psyched you out already with this new age stuff??? :)

100 things....

I stumbled across this blog idea and I thought it would be a cool to introduce myself to my blog audience post 100 random facts about my self ..though I don’t know where I’m going to dig up 100 facts …( this is probably highly narcissist …. But this is MY journal!!!!)… this is going to take a looooong time to read so I suggest you take breaks in the middle… hopefully you wont get lost in all this randomness…

1. My name is Natasha, I was named after the heroine of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, my mom was reading the book at the time. Incidentally mom wanted to name my younger sister Ayesha so our names sounded similar ,but my great grandmother didn’t like all these newfangled names and insisted my sister be named after a variant of Devi , our family deity… so my sister’s name is Devika ,which is a cool name.. I honestly don’t think I can do as good a job as my mother thinking up kids names!!!
2. My pet name with family is Babli , that was my dads contribution ,I respond with equal enthusiasm to both names, though at times I prefer babli to Natasha.. needless to say I was really excited when Bunty aur Babli was coming out… my sister’s pet name is Babusha ( also thanks to dad)
3. I am a woman.
4. I’m 25 years old.

7. I believe I show strong Aquarian traits!!! I check my daily horoscope ever so often….

When I opted for science PCMB in the 11th grade ( not completely out of choice ..but in hindsight I am glad I did ) I realized that I was going to have to reprogram my mind to think analytically , ( not a very easy task ) ,but I had to stick with it as I’d topped my school in tenth grade science
15. I can remember all sorts of random trivia and do alright in quizzes .
16. Old friends from the past usually remember me as the girl with the long hair , or the girl who used to win quizzes , or my wacky sense of humor ,yess i do have a sense of humour!!!
17. i would like to get a tattoo done ,but have been dissuaded most times by friends and family
18. I wear four rings on my fingers , some people think it’s way to much bling ,but I’ve grown attached to them now so wont take them off!!!

43. I was an avid reader till the age off 18 ..didn’t get much time to read after that??? So most of my reading at present has been pretty sporadic … and somewhat light .
44. pride and prejudice, books by Lucy Maud Montgomery, books by Louisa may Alcott, Richard Bach , the alchemist , Enid Blyton’s , especially the enchanted wood , malory towers and st. clares series, famous five’s are good but liked the fairy ,gnome and elf stuff better!!, chronicles of narnia , Ruskin bond , simplified Indian history and mythology , Acts of Faith –Eric Segal appeal to me .
45. I like John Cusack ,Aamir Khan , Owen Wilson and Luke Wilson!!!
46. I used to watch a lot of TV , haven’t been watching much the past couple of years
47. I try to watch grey’s anatomy when I can and sex and the city reruns
48. Like the Wonder Years and FRIENDS.. two of the best shows ever.
49. at home in India when I have the tv to myself I usually put on MTV , which pretty much runs hindi songs and trailers back to back. ( I like watching trailers of hindi movies that have songs in them)
50. I like Phalguni Pathak’s music, euphoria is good as well.
51. I like soy milk
52. I don’t mind eating raw fruits and vegetables the whole day!!!
53. I prefer not to eat non veg food when I can .

Does anyone who is not an American like Dr. Pepper?
Does anyone think that at the age when their mother had two kids, they can barely manage them selves, let alone anyone else …
Does any one feel that its not fair that they cant get at least 8 hours of sleep regularly without feeling guilty about it ?

Does anyone feel 25 is the new 22?

Does anyone wonder how they managed without 24 hours internet access?
Does anyone wish they got time to read a newspaper cover to cover ?

Cool huh, I actually had a 6th semester undergrad exam question about the working of this thing …little did I know I would end up in this guy's birthplace!!! And I’ve been to his house in Tuscaloosa because my friends wedding happened there .

Everybody's Free to wear Sunscreen

Ok , the author of the below words suggests that anyone above the age of 26 should prepare a sort of graduation speech they would give to graduating seniors , based on acquired wisdom . this would be a good exercise I would like to undertake if
a) I was 26
b) I had any wisdom to impart, which I really don’t
Anyway this is old ,most have probably seen it , I first read it/ heard the song when I was around 20 , it appealed to the year 2000 generation don’t know about the folks now now, but I still like it after all these years …

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’97... wear sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be IT.
The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.
I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.
You are NOT as fat as you imagine.
Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Sing.
Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.
Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.
Get plenty of calcium.
Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.
Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either. Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.
Dance. Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.
Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.
Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for good.
Be nice to your siblings; they are your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography in lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.
Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen.

With all those immigration issues showing up in the media this week , I thought this article by Colin Powell seemed relevant.

The America I Believe In

I believe in America and I believe in our people.
Later this month, I will be participating in a ceremony at Ellis Island where I will receive copies of the ship manifest and the immigration documents that record the arrival in America of my mother, Maud Ariel McKoy, from Jamaica aboard the motor ship Turialba in 1923. My father, Luther Powell, had arrived three years earlier at the Port of Philadelphia.
They met in New York City, married, became Americans and raised a family. By their hard work and their love for this country, they enriched this nation and helped it grow and thrive. They instilled in their children and grandchildren that same love of country and a spirit of optimism.
My family's story is a common one that has been told by millions of Americans. We are a land of immigrants: A nation that has been touched by every nation and we, in turn, touch every nation. And we are touched not just by immigrants but by the visitors who come to America and return home to tell of their experiences.
I believe that our greatest strength in dealing with the world is the openness of our society and the welcoming nature of our people. A good stay in our country is the best public diplomacy tool we have.
After 9/11 we realized that our country’s openness was also its vulnerability. We needed to protect ourselves by knowing who was coming into the country, for what purpose and to know when they left. This was entirely appropriate and reasonable. Unfortunately, to many foreigners we gave the impression that we were no longer a welcoming nation. They started to go to schools and hospitals in other countries, and frankly, they started to take their business elsewhere. We can’t allow that to happen. Our attitude has to be, we are glad you are here. We must be careful, but we must not be afraid.
As I traveled the world as secretary of state, I encountered anti-American sentiment. But I also encountered an underlying respect and affection for America. People still want to come here. Refugees who have no home at all know that America is their land of dreams. Even with added scrutiny, people line up at our embassies to apply to come here.
You see, I believe that the America of 2005 is the same America that brought Maud Ariel McKoy and Luther Powell to these shores, and so many millions of others. An America that each day gives new immigrants the same gift that my parents received. An America that lives by a Constitution that inspires freedom and democracy around the world. An America with a big, open, charitable heart that reaches out to people in need around the world. An America that sometimes seems confused and is always noisy. That noise has a name, it's called democracy and we use it to work through our confusion.
An America that is still the beacon of light to the darkest corner of the world.
Last year I met with a group of Brazilian exchange students who had spent a few weeks in America. I asked them to tell me about their experience here. One young girl told me about the night the 12 students went to a fast food restaurant in Chicago. They ate and then realized they did not have enough money to pay the bill. They were way short. Frightened, they finally told the waitress of their problem. She went away and she came back in a little while saying, "I talked to the manager and he said, 'It's ok.’" The students were still concerned because they thought the waitress might have to pay for it out of her salary. She smiled and she said, "No, the manager said he is glad you are here in the United States. He hopes you are having a good time, he hopes you are learning all about us. He said it's on him."
It is a story that those young Brazilian kids have told over and over about America. That's the America I believe in, that's the America the world wants to believe in.

Maybe I’m wrong but illegal immigrants or not, I’m sure 100-200 years ago the paper work to enter the United States was a lot less tedious . Really only native Americans , or the indigenous people of any country have the right, if any , to decide whom or whom not to let enter their country. And native American were pretty much wiped out of the face of this continent .. I have yet to meet an actual native american, though most of the general american population has had some native American blood surreptitiously seep into them.Having said that, Spanish is all over the place, it is Americas second language and many goverment forms , tv shows and books have a version in Espanol.

full circle

Life goes on …. Just when you think you’ve wiped the slate clean along comes something or someone to remind you of the past … And what happens then? Do you revert back to the person, people thought “you were”???

...life happens, things change, people change, I’ve changed!!! But not really ……the person I am truly inside..the absent minded , but kind hearted?? Goofy gal with the long hair , bad handwriting, et al …. that’s the true me , and those who saw me like that and continue to see me like that I love you and always will (to people who really know you , nothing you do or become should come as a surprise)

Yes life has come full circle… I’ve moved on and I’m back where I belong!!!

The Fortune Cookie Prophecy

I was married three times before I was seven years old.
My older brother Gary performed the ceremonies in our basement. Gary was good at entertaining the family and neighborhood kids with his creative ideas. Since I was the youngest boy in our group, I was often on the receiving end of his creativity.
What I remember most about those weddings is that all the girls were at least five years older than I was, and they all had beautiful eyes that sparkled when they laughed. Those weddings taught me to imagine what it would be like to find my soul mate one day and to be sure that I would know her by her beautiful eyes.
Puberty hit me late. I was still afraid of the opposite sex when I was fifteen, and yet I prayed every night for the girl I would marry. I asked God to help her do well in school and to be happy and full of energy-wherever and whoever she was.
I first kissed a girl when I was twenty-one. From that time forward, I dated many beautiful and talented young ladies, searching for the girl I had prayed for in my youth and still certain that I would know her by her eyes.
One day, my phone rang. "Don," it was my mother. "You know I told you about the Addisons, who moved in next door to us. Well, Clara Addison keeps asking me to invite you over for cards some night."
"Sorry, Mom, I've got a date that night."
"How could you? I haven't even told you what night it is?" my mother responded with exasperation.
"It doesn't matter when. I'm sure the Addisons are nice people, but I'm not going to waste an evening socializing with people who don't have any eligible daughters."
That's how stubborn I was-I was positive that there was no reason for me to go to visit the Addisons.
Years passed. I was twenty-six, and my friends were getting nervous about my prospects. They kept lining up blind dates for me. Many of these dates were fiascoes, and they were interfering with my social life. So I made up a few rules about blind dates:
1. No dates recommended by my mother (moms don't understand the sex-appeal factor).
2. No dates recommended by a female (they're too easy on each other).
3. No dates recommended by a single guy friend (if she's so awesome, how come he hasn't asked her out?).
In three simple steps, I eliminated 90 percent of all my blind dates, including one recommended by my old friend Karen. She called one evening to tell me that she had become good friends with a beautiful girl who reminded her of me. She said she knew we would hit it off. "Sorry," I said, "you're ruled out by rule number two."
"Don," she said, "You're crazy, and your silly rules are eliminating the girl you've been waiting for. But have it your way. Just take her name and phone number, and when you change your mind, call her."
To get Karen to stop bothering me about it, I said I would. The girl's name was Susan Maready. I never called her.
Just a couple of weeks later, I ran into my old buddy Ted in the university cafeteria. "Ted," I said. "You look like you're walking on air."
"Can you see stars under my feet?" he said, laughing. "The fact is, I just got engaged last night."
"Hey, congratulations!"
"Yeah," he said, "at thirty-two, I was beginning to wonder if any woman was going to have me." He pulled his wallet out of his pocket. "Here," he said, suddenly serious, "look at this.
It was a thin strip of paper from a fortune cookie. "You will be married within a year," it said.
"That's wild," I said. "They usually say something that would fit anyone, like 'You have a magnetic personality. They were really taking a chance with that one."
"No kidding," he said. "And look at me now."
A few weeks later, my roommate Charlie and I were eating dinner at a Chinese restaurant. I shared this story about Ted's fortune cookie prediction, and his subsequent engagement. Just then, the waiter brought over our postmeal fortune cookies. Charlie laughed at the coincidence as we opened our cookies. Mine said, "You have a magnetic personality." His said, "You or a close friend will be married within a year." A chill ran up my spine. This was really strange. Something told me to ask Charlie if I could keep his fortune, and he handed it to me with a smile.
Not long afterward, my classmate Brian said he wanted to introduce me to a young woman named Susan Maready. I was sure I'd heard that name before, but couldn't remember how or where. Since Brian was married, and therefore I wouldn't be breaking my "rules" about being fixed up by single guys, I accepted his offer to meet Susan.
Susan and I spoke on the phone, and planned a bike ride and a cookout. Then, the meeting-and as soon as I saw her, my heart started beating hard and wouldn't stop. Her large green eyes did something to me I couldn't explain. But somewhere in me, I knew that it was love at first sight.
After that wonderful evening, I remembered that this hadn't been the first time someone tried to fix me up with Susan. It all came back to me. Her name had been popping up all over the place for a long time. So the next time I had a chance to talk to Brian alone, I asked him about it.
He squirmed and tried to change the subject.
"What is it, Brian?" I asked.
"You'll have to ask Susan," was all he'd say.
So I did.
"I was going to tell you," she said. "I was going to tell you.
"Come on, Susan," I said. "Tell me what? I can't stand the suspense."
"I've been in love with you for years," she said, "since the first time I saw you from the Addisons' living room window. Yes-it was me they wanted you to meet. But you wouldn't let anyone introduce us. You wouldn't let the Addisons set us up; you wouldn't take Karen's word for it that we would like each other. I thought I was never going to meet you."
My heart swelled with love, and I laughed at myself. "Karen was right," I said. "My rules were crazy."
"You're not mad?" she asked.
"Are you kidding?" I said. "I'm impressed. I've got only one rule for blind dating now."
She gave me a strange look. "What's that?"
"Never again," I said and kissed her.
We were married seven months later.
Susan and I are convinced that we are true soul mates. When I was fifteen and praying for my future wife, she was fourteen and praying for her future husband.
After we had been married a couple of months, Susan said to me, "Do you want to hear something really strange?"
"Sure," I said. "I love to hear strange things."
"Well, about ten months ago, before I'd met you, my friends and I were at this Chinese restaurant, and…" She pulled a slip of paper from a fortune cookie out of her wallet:
"You will be married within a year…."

Well religion is personal and I practice mine… so if traditionalist be it, that’s what I am!!! Though I think an American probably developed this quiz….. tell me what u get ..you can try it out here.. they have a test for most religions ……

Life's Little instructions- Part 1

I thought I would pen some inspiring stuff in this blog . Life’s Little Instruction book is one of my favorite books , I have two of the series with me right now and a copy at home in India. I love inspirational reading, would say its my favorite genre of books…I’m a sucker for the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and recently bought a gift book called “A little book of hugs”, well for as long as I can ,whenever I feel like I’ll post a few instructions from the book in kind of the sequence they occur in the book.. again it’s called Life’s Little instruction Book..it’s by H. Jackson Brown Jr. ,and it’s a gem of a book :)
1. Believe in love at first sight .. ( no harm in believing!!!)
2. Never laugh at anyone’s dreams.
3. When you feel terrific notify your face.
4. Accept a breath mint if someone offers you one.
5. never apologize for being early for an appointment
6. use a travel agent. It costs no more and saves time and effort.
7. never miss an opportunity to ride a rollercoaster
8. never be the first one to break a family tradition (my dad’s favorite!!)
9. Park next to the end curb in parking lots. Your cars have half the chance of getting dented .
10. remember that everyone you meet is afraid of something, loves something and has lost something.
11. take along a small gift for the host or hostess when you are a dinner guest . A book is a good choice.
12. never be photographed with a cocktail glass in your hand.
13. remember no time is ever wasted that makes two people better friends.
14. there are people who will always come up with reasons why you cant do what you want to do .ignore them .
15. when boarding a bus say “hello” to the driver, say “thank you” when you get off.
