Me but not wholly me....

I do not know how other authors feel about their writings but always I have a strange sensation when I read something that I had written some time previously. That sensation is heightened when the writing had been done in the close and abnormal atmosphere of prison and the subsequent reading had taken place outside. I recognize it of course , but not wholly , it seems almost that I was reading some familiar piece written by another , who was near to me and yet who was different . Perhaps that is the measure of the change that has taken place in me.

So I have felt about this book also. It is mine and not wholly mine ,as I am constituted today; it represents rather some past self of mine which has already joined that long succession of other selves that existed for a while and faded away , leaving only a memory behind.

Jawaharlal Nehru
Preface of the book ‘The Discovery of India’

Not that I've ever lived in an environment close to being in prison ...but I was thinking about the same thing , it's kind of “the end of an era” point for me right now… every year ,for the past few years, around this time I embark on a ‘big’ journey ..last year it was my India trip after two years , the year before it was from Wellington to Tuscaloosa and prior to that ,Udipi to Wellington…. This time around the shift isn’t going to be as drastic as I imagined ( at some point of time I thought my options consisted of either Mississippi or Southern California :) ) …

Anyway a few days ago I chanced upon my student id card from 2004 … it was from my NZ college and the photograph was from three months before my arrival in NZ , when I was still in India.I realized that I had changed fundamentally from the girl in the picture …now I think …

Would she like me ?? If I had to use one word it would probably be ‘No’, just because I truly believe I was a better person then.. ( I wonder about the series of events that led from that to this..) …

Would she appreciate where I was at this present moment ???? Maybe yes , it’s definitely not what she wanted, but it’s beyond her wildest dreams(at that point…she has had wilder dreams before and after that time period ) ….

I wonder what will happen in the future..When I read these blog entries and see my (then) old id cards... how will I answer those questions?

Personally I feel they serve as good self improvement tools and reality checks :)

On a side note.... I've decided that one characteristic to figure out if I can truly get along with a person is when a phone conversation isn't a chore...

For the traveller.....

A passage from "The Prophet" by Khalil Gibran

A friend gave me the book before I left Wellington, the following passage resonated deeply then , and I guess it isn't surprising that I chance upon it once more....

"Almastafa, the chosen and the beloved, who was a dawn unto his own day, had waited twelve years in the city of Orphalase for his ship that was to return and bear him back to the isle of his birth. And in the twelfth year on the seventh day of Lelool, the month of reaping, he climbed a hill without the city walls and looked seaward; and he beheld his ship coming with the mist.

Then the gates of his heart were flung open, and his joy flew far over the sea. And he closed his eyes and prayed in the silences of his soul. But, as he ascended the hill, a sadness came upon him, and he thought in his heart:

"How shall I go in peace without sorrow? Nay, not without a word in the spirit shall I leave this city. Long were the days of pain I have spent within it's walls., and long were the nites of aloneness; And who can depart from his pain and his aloneness without regret? Too many fragments of the spirit have I scattered in these streets, and to many are the children of my longing that walk naked among these hills, and I cannot withdraw from them without a burden and an ache. It is not a garment I cast off this day, but a skin that I tear with my own hands. Nor is it a thought that I leave behind me, but a heart made sweet with hunger and with thirst. Yes, I cannot tarry any longer. The sea that calls all things unto her calls me, and I must embark. For to stay, the hours burn in the nite, is to freeze and to crystalize and be bound in a mold. Fain that I would take with me all that is here. But how shall I?

A voice cannot carry the tongue and the lips that gave it wings. Alone must it seek the ether. And alone and without his nest shall the eagle fly across the Sun".

Ithaca
When you set out on your journey to Ithaca,
pray that the road is long,
full of adventure, full of knowledge.
The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops,
the angry Poseidon -- do not fear them:
You will never find such as these on your path,
if your thoughts remain lofty, if a fine
emotion touches your spirit and your body.
The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops,
the fierce Poseidon you will never encounter,
if you do not carry them within your soul,
if your soul does not set them up before you.

Pray that the road is long.
That the summer mornings are many, when,
with such pleasure, with such joy
you will enter ports seen for the first time;
stop at Phoenician markets,
and purchase fine merchandise,
mother-of-pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
and sensual perfumes of all kinds,
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
visit many Egyptian cities,
to learn and learn from scholars.

Always keep Ithaca in your mind.
To arrive there is your ultimate goal.
But do not hurry the voyage at all.
It is better to let it last for many years;
and to anchor at the island when you are old,
rich with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting that Ithaca will offer you riches.

Ithaca has given you the beautiful voyage.
Without her you would have never set out on the road.
She has nothing more to give you.

And if you find her poor, Ithaca has not deceived you.
Wise as you have become, with so much experience,
you must already have understood what Ithacas mean.

Out of India

Think of your husband as a lover from another life,
And wonder what you did to deserve him.

From 'How to live in Suburbia when your heart is in the Himalayas' by Gwen Davis

Enchanting thought isn’t it… just extending it could lovers in this life become husbands in another.. wishful thinking and I wonder what we would have done to deserve it..also maybe husbands in previous lives appear as lovers or people we encounter in this life!!! just a cosmic joke giving us a glimpse of what had been once ….Goes back to the whole eternal reccurance idea… life is just the sum of finite experisnes and people that you keep going back to

Actually went to the library to borrow “White Mughals” by William Darlymple, but chanced upon ‘Out of India’ a collection of snippets from Indian Writing through the ages… a very interesting read, given that I am so interested in collecting vignettes myself . Also got introduced to “Meghdoot” by Kalidas..i think I may have read bout it before ..but it was good to read it again…

Love Story

Love Story is a pretty good book by Erich Segal, I like ‘Acts of Faith’ as well …as far as pop romances go, and there’s no better type of romance novel right!!??!!… ‘The Promise’ by Danielle Steel is in this category of books any reader of romantic fiction should have read, just because they were so popular some 20-30 years ago. Was reminded of Love Story today and here are a few quotes , the first one appeals much more to me than the never having to say you’re sorry bit!!!

What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful? And brilliant. That she love Mozart and Bach. And the Beatles. And me.

True love comes quietly, without banners or flashing lights. If you hear bells, get your ears checked.

Love means not ever having to say you're sorry.

Discovery of India

Ok, so I got my copy of Jawaharlal Nehru’s “The Discovery of India”.. I think I can read the book only after a few months, but going by the fact that I’ve had a copy of 'Letters from a father to a daughter' (gifted by a father (and mother )to a daughter) for around twenty years and don’t remember having read a page..(it was something the father and mother read)..and there’s this other collection of essays .. again for parental consumption.... Maybe I’ll take the book with me when I go to India next , and they'll read it before I ever will.. any how, wanted to read the book , it seems “Bharat Ek Khoj"was based on it.. I haven’t seen the entire series but the bits I have seen seem interesting

Anyway just skimming through the book..(and I’m sure I’ll find a lot of interesting stuff as I get further into it…).
In the section The Epics, History, Tradition ,and Myth, I find these lines from ‘The Digit of the moon”, by F.W. Bain
Here we are presented a legend or fancy on the creation of women….

A Digit Of The Moon - F.W. Bain translation (1901)

In the beginning, when Twashtri (the Divine Artificer) came to the creation of woman, he found that he had exhausted his materials in the making of man, and that no solid elements were left. In this dilemma, after profound meditation, he did as follows. He took the rotundity of the moon, and the curves of creepers, and the clinging of tendrils, and the trembling of grass, and the slenderness of the reed, and the bloom of flowers, and the lightness of leaves, and the tapering of the elephant's trunk, and the glances of deer, and the clustering of rows of bees, and the joyous gaiety of sunbeams, and the weeping of clouds, and the fickleness of the winds, and the timidity of the hare, and the vanity of the peacock, and the softness of the parrot's bosom, and the hardness of adamant, and the sweetness of honey, and the cruelty of the tiger, and the warm glow of fire, and the coldness of snow, and the chattering of jays, and the cooing of the kokila, and the hypocrisy of the crane, and the fidelity of the chakrawaka ( a kind of duck I believe), and compounding all these together, he made woman and gave her to man. But after one week, man came to him and said: Lord, this creature that you have given me makes my life miserable. She chatters incessantly and teases me beyond endurance, never leaving me alone; and she requires incessant attention, and takes all my time up, and cries about nothing, and is always idle; and so I have come to give her back again, as I cannot live with her. So Twashtri said: Very well; and took her back. Then after another week, man came again to him and said: Lord, I find that my life is very lonely since I gave you back that creature. I remember how she used to dance and sing to me, and look at me out of the corner of her eye, and play with me, and cling to me; and her laughter was music, and she was beautiful to look at, and soft to touch; so give her back to me again. So Twashtri said: Very well; and gave her back again. Then after only three days, man came back to him again and said: Lord, I know not how it is; but after all I have come to the conclusion that she is more of a trouble than a pleasure to me; so please take her back again. But Twashtri said: Out on you! Be off! I will have no more of this. You must manage how you can. Then man said: But I cannot live with her. And Twashtri replied: Neither could you live without her. And he turned his back on man, and went on with his work. Then man said: What is to be done?

Very poetic and all ..but ...

"In the beginning, when Twashtri came to the creation of woman, he found that he had exhausted his materials in the making of man?? "

Why this second class treatment ,and not only here..Eve was also created as an after thought…

Love in time of War

Growing up we used to frequently visit to the neighborhood supermarket just in front of our building, I had a friend around 3 years older than I was ,the supermarket had a nice greeting card section that also stocked posters, my friend was always on the lookout for war time love posters ..at the time I preferred posters with the comic character Garfield on them ,and didn’t really get what the fuss was over black and white posters with the people doing nothing more exciting than running behind a departing train ( possibly an American lady saying goodbye to her love ,who was off to fight a war)…

But thinking back ..there was something to those stories ..imagine loved ones parting not sure if they’ll ever see each other again( when ‘I’ll never ever see you again’ meant just that… pre VOIP, Instant messaging , improved international travel ,and Orkut accounts.)…now when journeys around the world seem like no big deal;imagine the long sea journeys from one continent to the other to meet your loved one ….. love in the South Pacific, survivors of the Holocaust falling in love ;reuniting with their loved ones, or others who fell in love with their saviors;
The case where Anne Frank and Peter Van Daan could not explore their relationship further because a they passed away before their time , when in times of so much strife and tragedy people found time for love, when one of the sisters from fiddler in the roof (Jewish) fell in love with a Russian Non-Jew around the time of the Russian Revolution .. in the Sound of Music.. love happens at the time of impending Nazi occupation.

I know we have wars happening in the present age as well….but I feel right now it isn’t as encompassing and the effects are not felt directly by as many people as it was then…not that I’m asking folks to go to Iraq. I’m just thinking how lucky we are that right now when we are lucky enough to find true love ( which should probably should be in abundance given the war and relative tragedy free times we live in ), the reason we have for love not reaching fruition is “our parents will object”.. amongst others . I know the stories above are exceptions… and a lot more arranged marriages were happening at the time…..but even then…………………….

On a seperate note, as a child I used to imagine how it would be if I were born at another time in the past and in another place than I actually was…some of these time periods include… Prince Edward Island ,Canada at the beginning of the 20th century …just because my favorite books growing up.. Anne of Green Gables and the Avonlea series were based there………….. maybe as a cowgirl in the American Wild West….before the turn of the past century … I guess the United Kingdom fit in in my imaginings somewhere as well( more fictional though, based on my Enid Blytons’).
As you can see I was rather influenced by the books and TV programs I watched at the time .I have to confess I never wanted to be born a 100 years ago in my native place in India …some how the thought of child/baby marriage doesn’t particularly appeal to me…I’m quite happy being an Indian woman born the time I was…

The Zahir

I’m a fan of The Alchemist, I believe it’s an inspiring book, and gave me insight when I needed it the most. For those who haven’t read The Alchemist, it’s a story about achieving your dreams …. a fable that you can read in one go, I wouldn’t call it ‘heavy’ reading, and that’s the good part!!!
Anyway moving on to The Zahir, Paulo Coelho’s latest novel , I haven’t read a non text book for a while now (the last book I read was probably last summer)!! I was also a bit jaded with the message in The Alchemist …sometimes you want something with all your heart and the universe will conspire to help you get it, but you wont get it , or if you do you realize its not what you wanted after all!!! Having said this, even when I believed more in the message in the Alchemist, I didn’t think of Paulo Coelho as some kind of Prophet /Messiah /spiritual type person , or atleast I don’t now!! He’s just a person who writes books and I believe to an extent he believes and practices the messages in his writings.

Anyway, unlike The Alchemist , The Zahir is rather longwinded. The protagonists lead unconventional lives….for me the book started getting interesting mid way into the story, which incidentally is about a world renowned author’s search for his missing ‘ex’ wife.. However like The Alchemist, Mr. Coelho does have some very good insights on life, Some interesting quotes by the author , related to “The Zahir”

“There's a lot of me in it. But the character( the lead protagonist) is more egotistical. I'm also egotistical, but not the way the character is. This guy is successful, he has everything, but his wife has left him. The most important value - love - is missing. What is wrong with this institution called 'marriage'? What is wrong with this institution called 'the pursuit of happiness'?”

"I realized I don't need a lot of things to be happy,"

“Anyone who fails to obey the voice and arrives sooner or later than he should will never get what he wants .”

“I think it is a problem of our society that we don't enjoy (ourselves.) We have these values, like, you have to be rich, you have to get a diploma, you have to work hard, otherwise you are useless, you are nothing but a pariah. And the book asks, 'Is it true? This is what my mom told me, but is it true?”

I for one would really like to meet the person who thought of these ‘values’ and the other ‘mental blocks” , society ,myself included , entertain.. though I’m making a conscious effort to discard these and other unreasonable values ;)

From Author Paulo Coelho living simple life by ANGELA DOLAND of the Associated Press:
The central theme of the novel centers on conquering the obsessive goals people believe they must reach to attain happiness. In this case, the object of obsession is the main character's wife. But it can be anything, Coelho says - making money, finding love or having children.
Such single-minded, goal-driven passions merely deplete an individual, he says. He calls those passions "zahirs" - an Arabic word meaning "visible" or "present" which inspired a tale by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. For Coelho, a zahir is "something which, once touched or seen, can never be forgotten, and which gradually so fills our thoughts that we are driven to madness."
When you're obsessed with something, "you don't follow the signs, you don't relax. You don't even understand why you want it, you want it like a child," Coelho says. "You start living for the obsession alone ... You want to arrive somewhere regardless of whether you're enjoying the road or not.

O.K. before I completed reading the book , I was a bit worried that right now I didn’t have a personal Zahir..now I realise that it’s a good thing :)

decoded....

Has the entire world gone Da Vinci code crazy??? I knew it had when I saw a magazine cover story about the Da Vinci code Diet in the check out aisle of the neighbourhood supermarket. And the book section contained atleast five books dealing with Dan Brown’s book. I was half tempted to buy the Special Illustrated Edition, (the Angels and Demons special edition was my introduction to Dan Brown ), but I already have a roadside Indian copy back home ( which was where I finally read the book , Dec 2005). Can I buy the book Ma? This one’s got pictures even…

Read..Read ..Read (Books!!)

Is this a sign of things to come?
It’s eight minutes long ,but made me think , are we gearing away from print media of all types and towards a future of internet based, narrow dimensional perspectives…I have to admit i may have fallen prey myself..
Epic
